Insulated Concrete Forms

Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) are hollow blocks or panels made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) that are stacked to create the shape of the walls of a building. These forms are then filled with reinforced concrete to create a strong, energy-efficient, and durable structure. ICF construction combines the strength of concrete with the insulation properties of EPS, making it an excellent choice for residential homes.

Components of ICF

ICF blocks are composed of two primary materials:

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Foam

EPS foam is a lightweight, rigid material made from expanded polystyrene beads. These beads are expanded using steam and then fused together to form blocks or panels. EPS foam is known for its excellent insulation properties, which significantly reduce heat transfer and energy consumption for heating and cooling. The foam panels are designed with interlocking mechanisms to ensure stability and ease of assembly during construction.

Reinforced Concrete

The core of an ICF block is filled with reinforced concrete, which provides the structural strength and durability necessary for the building. Reinforced concrete is made by mixing cement, aggregates (such as sand and gravel), water, and reinforcing materials like steel bars or fibers. This combination creates a composite material that offers both insulation and robust structural support.

How ICF Construction Works

The construction process using ICF involves several key steps:

  1. Stacking the Forms: ICF blocks are dry-stacked (without mortar) to create the shape of the exterior walls of a building. The interlocking design of the blocks ensures precise alignment and stability.
  2. Reinforcing with Steel Rebar: Steel rebar is placed within the hollow forms to provide additional structural integrity. The height and width of the concrete wall as well as the structural stress, all play a part in determining how much rebar is required to ensure the foundation’s structural integrity.  This step is crucial for ensuring the walls can withstand various loads and stresses.
  3. Pouring Concrete: Once the forms are stacked and reinforced, concrete is poured into the hollow core of the blocks. Once the concrete is poured, each process begins to mend together becoming one. This process is typically completed using a concrete pump truck to efficiently transport concrete where needed. A fluid concrete mixture is used to ensure the concrete fills the form entirely.   
  4. Curing and Finishing: After the concrete is poured, it undergoes a curing process to harden and gain strength. Once cured, these ICF walls can be finished like any other wall. The ICF blocks hold a webbed system to accept fasteners. This allows for fastening drywall directly to the ICF wall internally, as well as siding externally.
